STD rates in Los Angeles and the greater Los Angeles County area have been on the rise in the past few years. The most commonly reported STD in the region is chlamydia. In 2010, there were a total of 47,628 cases of chlamydia reported in the county.

In 2014, there were a total of 54,363 cases of chlamydia reported.3 Gonorrhea cases have been increasing as well. In 2010, there were a total of 10,022 cases of gonorrhea reported in Los Angeles County.

In 2014, there were a total of 15,135 cases of gonorrhea reported.4 Throughout all of California, syphilis rates have been rising. In 2010, there were a total of 690 cases of syphilis reported in Los Angeles County. In 2014, there were a total of 1,192 cases of syphilis reported.

Newly diagnosed cases of HIV have been steadily decreasing over the past several years. In 2009, there were 2,217 newly diagnosed cases of HIV in Los Angeles County. In 2013, there were 1,268 newly diagnosed cases of HIV. Men account for 90.2% of all newly diagnosed cases.

HIV was most common in people between the ages of 30 and 39. The most common mode of transmission for HIV was in men who have sex with other men which accounted for 77% of all cases reported.6 The Center for Disease Control recommends screening for HIV at least once for all people between the ages of 13 and 64.
